For the first time ever, the medical establishment has documented a case of successful recovery from cancer using curcumin. This powerful substance is present in the spice turmeric and has shown to have strong anti-cancer properties.
Woman Beats Cancer Using Curcumin
Dieneke Fergueson is an English woman who started her battle with blood cancer, called myeloma, in 2007. She had undergone many grueling treatments including three rounds of chemotherapy. When conventional treatments proved unsuccessful, Ferguson decided to start supplementing with curcumin.
Ferguson’s approach to treating her cancer was to take 8g of Dr. Best C3 Curcumin with Bioperine per day. This simple approach accomplished what conventional treatments couldn’t. Ferguson was able to successfully halt the disease and now enjoys a normal life. DailyMail reports:
Her doctors, from Barts Health NHS Trust in London, wrote in the British Medical Journal Case Reports: ‘To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report in which curcumin has demonstrated an objective response in progressive disease in the absence of conventional treatment.’
The experts, led by Dr Abbas Zaidi, said some myeloma patients took dietary supplements alongside conventional treatment but ‘few, if any, use dietary supplementation as an alternative to standard antimyeloma therapy’.
But they added: ‘In the absence of further antimyeloma treatment the patient plateaued and has remained stable for the past five years with good quality of life.’
Turmeric v. Curcumin
Researchers have shown that curcumin has strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It is an effective painkiller and reduces the risk of many illnesses. The doctors in charge of Ferguson’s case wrote that “biological activity of curcumin is indeed remarkable.” They added that it has “anti-proliferative effects in a wide variety of tumor cells.”

Unfortunately, eating turmeric isn’t likely to have the same effects as consuming curcumin in concentrated form. First, turmeric root itself only contains only about 2-3 percent curcumin. Secondly, when ingesting curcumin, you may be absorbing only a small percentage of this powerful compound.
Regardless of these limitations, there are ways to ensure higher absorption of curcumin. Dr. William LaValley of the Integrative and Complementary Medicine Section of Doctors states:
The natural product industry has developed a standard of a 95-percent concentration of curcumin. Initially, years ago, that was what we had available for patients. Even at that, taking a 95-percent concentration orally in a capsule, only one percent of that could be absorbed. In order to get amounts of curcumin in the bloodstream that are reasonable to have therapeutic effect, people had to take large amounts of curcumin…
In searching the literature, I found that a way to change that, to dramatically increase the bioavailability, is actually a very simple process of bringing water to a boil, putting those capsules or some dry powder (I use it by the teaspoon), and boiling it for 10 to 12 minutes. That increases the amount of curcumin dissolved in water from that one-percent amount up to 12 percent or so. That amount is a vast number of curcumin molecules that are now in a bioavailable or absorbable form. (source)
According to Ferguson, there are other ways to increase absorption. First, she recommends buying supplements formulated with bioperine, a substance found in pepper. As well, Ferguson takes her curcumin supplements on an empty stomach before bedtime.
