A homemade makeup remover can be a lifesaver for anyone who wants to stay away from synthetic chemicals, which can irritate skin. The beauty of this recipe is that this cream can act as a makeup remover, as well as an ultra-moisturizing cold cream for flaky skin found on elbows, feet and shins.
When you make your own personal care products, you know exactly what is in them. They often work just as well as conventional products, but without the emulsifiers or surfactants that can dry out or aggravate skin.
In addition, if you have very sensitive skin or chronically dry eyes, conventional makeup removers may irritate your skin. Furthermore, some of us don’t want to put products on their skin that contain alcohol, fomaldehyde or fragrances. Sadly, these ingredients are present in many personal care products.
Recipe for Homemade Makeup Remover and Cold Cream
In a double broiler, warm up the following ingredients:
- 1 Tablespoon of jojoba base oil
- 7 Tablespoons of pure vegetable shortening (not lard)
When these two have completely melted, remove from heat and let cool for about 10 minutes. Then add:
- 10 drops of lavender or Roman chamomile essential oil
Stir contents with whisk or small spoon. Once the mixture begins to thicken, pour into a storage jar and secure with lid.
You will need to leave the mixture for a couple of hours, until it becomes thick and creamy. You can hasten this process by refrigerating your mixture for about 30 minutes.
This homemade makeup remover does not need to be refrigerated. It should do used within 6 to 12 months.
As with all new skincare products, make sure to test this cream on a small section of your skin, such as the inside of your arm. You may have allergies even to natural ingredients, so always test them first.
