On May 14th, Verdun Hayes of Britain became the world’s oldest skydiver. This earned him a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records. At 101 and 38 days old, Hayes beat out the previous record holder from Canada who was a mere 101 years and 3 days old.
Hayes has lived quite a full life. In World War ll, he fought on the beaches of Normandy where he lost many dear friends. He married the love of his life, Hilda, at the age of 21. They were married for 76 year. He attributes his long life to her love and support. She died just six years ago at the age of 95.
Despite the fact that Hayes had his colon removed 23 years ago, he has remained active and adventurous. He has flown gliders, been a county champion runner, and even survived a hot air balloon accident in his 80’s. Currently Hayes resides with his daughter. Gardening, photography, and woodworking fill his days.
