My recent foray into the Whole30 diet made me realize that sugar, preservatives and food additives are present in the majority of pre-packaged foods, and especially in condiments. Even seemingly-healthy and organic condiments often have some type of sweetener. Fortunately, I found that it was surprisingly easy to make my own substitutes. These three homemade Whole30 condiments are now main-stays in my home. Actually, they are so easy to make that there’s really no reason to go back to the store-bought products.
1. Homemade Ketchup
Homemade ketchup and mayonnaise are inexpensive, simple and often taste better.
- 1 6-oz can organic tomato paste
- ¼-½ cup raw apple cider vinegar (if using ¼ cup vinegar, add ¼ cup of water to end up with ½ cup of liquid)
- ½ tsp ground oregano
- ½ tsp ground cumin
- 1 tsp mustard powder
- ½ tsp finely ground salt
- ⅛ tsp finely ground pepper
- Combine all ingredients and mix well.
2. Homemade Mayo
Next, here’s the recipe for the second most-common condiment, mayonnaise.
- 2 whole pastured eggs
- 1 Tbsp apple cider vinegar
- ¾ tsp salt
- ¼ tsp mustard powder
- Blend all ingredients in a food processor.
- SLOWLY add 2 cups of extra virgin olive oil.
- Continue to blend until desired consistency.
3. Salad Dressing
Salad dressing can transform a pile of fresh vegetables into a delicious meal. Below are two ideas for a tasty salad dressing you can make at home. Simply, all you have to do is whisk the ingredients together, and you are done!
Balsamic Dressing
- ¼ cup balsamic vinegar
- ¼-½ mustard powder
- 1 shallot or green onion, minced
- ¼ tsp salt
- ¼-½ tsp fresh ground pepper
- ¼ cup olive oil
Lemon Garlic Dressing
- 1 lemon, juiced (strain seeds)
- 2-3 garlic cloves, minced
- Splash of raw apple cider vinegar
- ¼ tsp salt
- ¼-½ tsp fresh ground pepper
- ¼ cup olive oil
Other Homemade Whole30 Condiments
Clearly, these are only three condiments among many. Thus, if you’re interested in making other condiments, there are many other resources that offer all types of homemade recipes. Even if you are not following the Whole30 diet, reducing chemicals, food additives and sweeteners in your diet will benefit your body immensely. The good news is that homemade condiments won’t compromise taste or break the bank.
