Bamboo is one of the most sustainable resources on the planet because of its versatility and rapid growth rate. Its canes reach maturity in a single growing season, making it an ideal material for many applications. Just a few examples are utensils, fabrics, furniture, and phone cases.
Last year, a group of 12 architects got together and created the first annual International Bamboo Architecture Biennial installation in China. These architects created, and installed, 18 permanent structures in a small agricultural village. The installation demonstrated how contemporary design can incorporate traditional materials. Some of the structures include a youth hostel, a bridge, a ceramics museum, and a learning center.
